EOR MODEL AND DESIGN FRAMEWORK

[Framework Home] [Phase 1] [Phase 2] [Phase 3]

1.6 Identify MAPs

In this stage of Phase 1 of the EoR Model and Design Framework you will turn your attention from the learner to the MAP. The aim of this step is to ascertain what kinds of support are available in the ZAA (Zone of Available Assistance) identified in previous steps. These forms of support may be human or technological. They may be implicit or explicit. They may be formal/informal, frequent/infrequent, high level/low level, etc.  Identification of available forms of support (MAPs) and reflection on the qualities and features of these resources will also bring into play further consideration of filters and influences. This step not only builds on preceding steps in further refining and defining resources and their relation to the learner and her context, but also anticipates more specific design activities in Phase 3 of the EoR Design Framework.

For more on this step, see pp 27, 53, 107, 115, 123-4 of Re-Designing Learning Contexts.

Summary

  • the aim of this step is to reflect on those resources within the learner's ZAA which may operate as MAPs and to identify ways in which these might support the learner
  • MAPs can be people or tools, they are used to support the learner in meeting her learning needs
  • there may be more than one MAP; multiple MAPs may offer alternative potentials within the learner's context
  • technology may be a MAP
  • identification of available MAPs is a precursor to elaboration of the learner's ZPA
  • the ZPA (Zone of Proximal Adjustment)
  • a key role of the MAP is to support the learner in further developing and enhancing their cognitive awareness
  • the MAP is a fundamental element in the EoR Design Framework
