EOR MODEL AND DESIGN FRAMEWORK
Case Studies
The following case studies are provides as worked examples of the EoR Model and Design Framework. The examples are designed to illustrate the process of data collection and analysis and the application of the EoR framework across a wide range and variety of settings. Whilst recognising that different studies may take slightly different approaches, they are provided as exemplar models as an illustrative indicator of ways in which the EoR can be used.

Self-Managed Learning
in Out-of-School Contexts

This study explored the available resources and learning contexts of learners at an "out-of-school" learning centre in the South of England. Learners at the centre used a self-managed learning (SML) approach. Learners designed their own curriculum, choosing to study for formal qualifications or to pursue individual interests, e.g. music, drama, language learning, animal husbandry, film-making, etc. Learners had greater choice and flexibility, but were more responsible and accountable for their own learning. As a result, they needed to become "resourceful learners" and to develop a deeper understanding of the resources available to them - individually and socially, locally and globally.

Self-Motivated Learner

WORK IN PROGRESS. A study that uses autoethnography to explore a single adult learner (the researcher) learning the French language over a six month period, both in France and in the UK. The main aim of this study is to test the practical implications for participants of using the Ecology of Resources framework for developing technology rich learning activities.

miLexicon: Designing Support for Self-directed Vocabulary Learning in Technology Rich Settings

WORK IN PROGRESS. The main focus of this study is the design of mobile software to support self-directed foreign language vocabulary learning. One aim is to demonstrate how analysis of learner context, framed by the Ecology of Resources model, informs design decisions.
An initial design was developed through analysis of a model of learner context derived from interviews with successful language learners and narratives describing specific vocabulary learning experiences. The evolving design is informed by the designer's own experience and analysis of using versions of the software over several months and now through participatory research, in which participants are capturing and sharing their accounts of how they use the software and other resources to support their own self-directed vocabulary learning.
